What is your core metric — and what will move the needle the most?

Harry Kane has just beaten the longstanding record of Jimmy Greaves, to become Spurs’ record goalscorer of all time.

I’m a Newcastle fan so he reminds me a lot of Alan Shearer, who stayed at his boyhood club even through tough times. I can definitely see Kane getting close to or even beating the Premier League record of 260, currently held by Shearer.

People sadly often don’t remember number two. But, before we remove Jimmy Greaves from our collective conscious, there was a very interesting (and quite profound) quote he once said:

“What I had to do was get in the box 500 times a season. 100 times I’d connect. 50 times the goalkeeper would save it. Half of the rest would go in and 25 goals a season would do me — just by making sure I got in the box 500 times.”

We sometimes overcomplicate life. Much of life’s achievements often come down to a numbers game, pure and simple.

When people complain about a lack of results, more often than not, it comes down to a lack of the right activity.

What is your most important metric — and then figure out the one thing that will really move the needle for those core metrics.

For Kane, Greaves and Shearer their metric is goals — and the one thing they must do is to get in the box.

What does that look like for you?
